Mini Gastric Bypass

Mini Gastric Bypass

The mini-gastric bypass (single anastomosis gastric bypass) is somewhat of a combination of the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass procedures. The upper part of the stomach is divided into a tube, similar to the top three quarters of a sleeve, and then connected to a loop of intestine. This results in a smaller stomach and the bypassing of 59 – 78 inches of the small intestine. The end result is a reduction in stomach food and drink capacity producing a feeling of being full after consuming a small amount of food, less food (caloric) absorption as it bypasses a portion of the intestine, and a reduction in hunger hormone production.

Mini Gastric Bypass is performed to help you lose excess weight and reduce your risk of weight related health issues. Those included but are not limited to:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Cancer
  • Infertility

It is important for you to know that making permanent changes to your diet and lifestyle will be needed to maximize your weight loss. With smart food choices, regular exercise and good eating habits, patients who have had a mini gastric bypass should enjoy and maintain good weight loss.
