Hiatal Hernia Repair

A hiatal hernia occurs when your stomach bulges through your weakened diaphragm muscle at the site of the hiatus which is a small opening that your esophagus goes through.

If the hiatal hernia is large enough, it can allow food and digestive acids to back up into your esophagus resulting in heartburn. There are occasions when a hiatal hernia will need to be surgically repaired.

The Hiatal Hernia Surgery procedure typically involves pulling your stomach down into your abdomen and then making your hiatus smaller or reconstructing an esophageal sphincter. At times, hiatal hernia surgery is done at the same time bariatric surgery for weight loss is done. Surgery may be performed laparoscopically or via a single incision. This single incision procedure would typically be used only when the hiatal hernia repair is not being done at the same time as bariatric surgery.

Symptoms of a hiatal hernia can include:

  • Heartburn
  • Backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus (acid reflux)
  • Regurgitation of food or liquids into the mouth
  • Chest or abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Vomiting of blood
  • Feeling full soon after you eat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Passing of black stools, which possibly indicates gastrointestinal bleeding

Causes:
