Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve Surgery (or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) is a bariatric procedure that removes 75-80% of the stomach. Part of the stomach that is removed produces a hormone called ghrelin that creates hunger pains. This results in lowered ghrelin levels which typically results in a decrease in feeling hungry. So, not only does the stomach size get reduced, the hunger driving hormone production is reduced. It is now the most commonly performed bariatric procedure in the United States and worldwide.

The Sleeve Gastrectomy is performed to help you lose excess weight and reduce your risk of weight related health issues. Those include but are not limited to:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Infertility

It is important for you to know that making permanent changes to your diet and lifestyle will be needed to maximize your weight loss. With smart food choices, regular exercise and good eating habits, patients who have had a sleeve gastrectomy should enjoy and maintain good weight loss.
