Bariatric Procedure
Gastric Bypass
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, is a procedure that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting that pouch directly to the small intestine. After gastric bypass, food will go into this small pouch of stomach, which reduces food and drink capacity, and then directly into the small intestine. This allows the food to bypass most of your stomach and about the first 40-59 inches of your small intestine. That results in less food absorption.
This bypass procedure does affect the absorption of certain vitamins and supplementation is required post-surgery. In general, you will need to take an adult multivitamin, vitamin b12 and calcium supplements on a regular basis.
Gastric Bypass is performed to help you lose excess weight and reduce your risk of weight related health issues. Those included, but are not limited to:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Heart disease
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Type 2 diabetes
- Stroke
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Cancer
- Infertility
It is important for you to know that making permanent changes to your diet and lifestyle will be needed to maximize your weight loss. With smart food choices, regular exercise and good eating habits, patients who have had a gastric bypass should enjoy and maintain good weight loss.
