Bariatric Procedure

Duodenal Switch

Duodenal Switch

Duodenal Switch is the combination of a gastric sleeve procedure, where approximately 75% of the stomach is removed, and a bypass of approximately ⅔ or more of the intestine. The duodenum is divided and attached further down the intestine. The upper portion of the intestine is stapled off, remains in place, and is connected to the lower part of the intestine so digestive enzymes can meet the food where the duodenum is newly connected to the intestine. Given the pylorus muscle is left intact, dumping that frequently occurs with other bariatric procedures, is significantly reduced.

The end result is a reduction in stomach food and drink capacity producing a feeling of being full after consuming a small amount of food, less food (caloric) absorption as food and drink bypasses a significant portion of the intestine, and a reduction in hunger hormone production.

This procedure has been proven to be the most effective bariatric surgery for weight loss. Most patients can expect to lose 60 – 80% of their excess body weight over 2 years.
